Criticized quota system changed after deadly protests

Bangladesh will sharply cut the quota system that led to deadly protests in the country in July.

The quota system meant that 56 percent of government jobs were reserved for specific groups, the largest of which were descendants of veterans who fought for Pakistan’s independence in 1971.

The new decision means that it will instead be five percent of government jobs that are reserved for the descendants.

The system was reinstated earlier this summer and led to violent demonstrations. During the past week, at least 100 people have lost their lives, among them several police officers.
