Warframe was always considered the MMO with space ninjas, the next DLC sends you to the 90s and looks completely different

When you think of Warframe, you probably think of science fiction and space ninjas, but the new expansion takes you back to the 90s.

What kind of DLC will this be? The next major expansion is called “Warframe 1999” and breaks with the setting that we have been used to from Warframe for over 10 years. Instead of space ninjas in the distant future, the DLC gives us “Arthur”, a rustic hero in a leather outfit with a weapon that is suspiciously reminiscent of an AK-47.

Arthur is a so-called protoframe, which is very similar to the Warframe “Excalibur” and first appears during the story of “Whispers in the Walls” – the major expansion from December 2023.

In Warframe 1999 you travel back in time and find yourself on Earth in 1999. As Arthur you team up with six other Protoframes to track down Dr. Albrecht Entrati.

When is Warframe: 1999 coming out? Although an exact release date for Warframe: 1999 is not yet known, the expansion is scheduled to be released in winter 2024.

This is what makes the extension special: Warframe: 1999 is completely different from what you’ve known from Warframe so far. The entire setting screams 90s, creating a completely new Warframe experience.

There are:

  • a typical 90s boy band
  • a retro instant messenger system that lets you build relationships with six protoframes
  • a motorcycle called Atomicyle that you can actually ride
  • There will also be a new Warframe called “Cyte-09” that has sniper skills and will also support you as a sniper in 1999.

Prologue quest for 1999 already playable in August

What kind of quest is this? You can play the introduction to the upcoming expansion as early as August 2024. The prologue quest is titled “The Lotus Eater” and takes place after the events of Whispers in the Walls.

In addition to the prologue quest, the Heirloom skins for Ember and Rhino will be permanently available for purchase starting in August. Sevagoth Prime will also be released.

Warframe recently got a new competitor in the form of The First Descendant. Nexon’s loot shooter has a lot in common with Warframe – but Destiny also served as inspiration: New loot shooter on Steam allegedly copied Warframe – Now players can find icons from Destiny 2 in the game
