Legionella bacteria multiply in stagnant water and can be found in water pipes, showers, and hot tubs. They can cause Pontiac fever (mild flu-like symptoms) or severe pneumonia.
How Legionella infects
Infection occurs through inhalation of finely divided water droplets, e.g. when showering or in a hot tub. The bacteria are also found in soil, but infection through inhalation of soil dust is unusual. Not contagious between people.
Risk groups
People with weakened immune systems, the elderly and smokers run a higher risk of getting sick. It is common to get infected abroad.
Notifiable disease
Legionella must be reported by doctors to the region’s infection control doctor and the Public Health Agency.
Symptoms
The incubation period is 5-6 days. Symptoms may include high fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, difficulty breathing, diarrhea and confusion.
Treatment
Legionella pneumonia is treated with antibiotics and often requires hospitalization. Early treatment almost always leads to recovery.
