President of Vietnam Thu Lam took over the duties of the party’s general secretary on Thursday. At the time, the party announced that Trong must focus on recovery.
Trong also served as the President of Vietnam from 2018 to 2021. He also served as chairman of the 19-member politburo of the country’s ruling party.
Vietnam’s top leadership consists of four positions: the General Secretary of the Communist Party, the President, the Prime Minister, and the Speaker of the National Assembly. The position of party secretary is generally considered the most prestigious.
