In February last year, regional police chief Mats Löfving received harsh criticism at a high-profile press conference. The investigator recommended the police consider firing him.
That same evening, he was found dead in his home.
The Work Environment Agency later stated that there may have been a connection between work environment deficiencies and the police chief’s death.
A preliminary investigation was started and in May former national police chief Anders Thornberg was suspected of causing the death of another.
Assured help and support
The investigation is now closed, prosecutor Lars Morand writes in a press release.
“Based on the investigative material that is now available, it is not possible to prove that the person or persons who were suspects have committed a crime,” the press release states.
The prosecutor writes that Anders Thornberg was not responsible for the work environment for Mats Löfving at the time of his death.
“A number of measures, which appear to be adequate, have also been taken to ensure help and support for Mats Löfving in connection with his having to leave his post”.
“Clear connection”
However, writes Lars Morand, there is a clear connection between the information that investigator Runar Viksten gave at the press conference and Mats Löfving’s death.
Anders Thornberg knew that the data would be presented.
“However, the preliminary investigation has not revealed circumstances that show that Anders Thornberg realized or should have realized that there was a considerable risk that Mats Löfving would take his own life due to what would appear at the press conference”.
