This summer, many motorists will be using the motorway which is home to the most noisy speed camera in France.
The summer holidays are fast approaching. In a few days, July holidaymakers will be the first to leave, en masse to the seaside but also to the mountains or the countryside. Among these millions of French people happy to be able to get a change of scenery for a few days, many will take their car. As every year, the motorways will therefore record an exceptional flow of vehicles for around ten weekends. And as every year, many motorists will have the unpleasant surprise of being flashed by a speed camera.
Today, nearly 500 speed control devices are installed along French roads. But some crackle a lot more than others. This is the case of this radar, installed in the south of France, which has been recording a record number of violation messages for several years. When the hit parade of the radars that flash the most was drawn up, this one appeared every year among the flash champions! This was still the case in 2023 according to Automobile Magazine. On this busy section of the A8 motorway, an average of nearly 200,000 drivers are flashed for speeding every year. With a peak observed during the summer when road traffic is much heavier.
It must be said that this fixed radar is located on a holiday motorway used by a very large number of French people during the summer period. It was installed in 2008 in the Alpes-Maritimes department, near Cagnes-sur-Mer, in the Nice-Cannes direction. At this location, just before the exit for Cagnes-sur-Mer, vehicles are not allowed to drive at more than 90 km/h. Suffice to say that motorists are obliged to have their foot on the brake pedal, even more so since October 1, 2018, when the speed limit was reduced from 110 km/h to 90 km/hy inclusive on this stretch of straight line.
And be careful if you have to pass in front of this radar in the coming weeks, because since the summer of 2023 the speed limit between Cagnes-sur-Mer and Nice has been lowered by another 20 km/h due to ongoing works. It is therefore forbidden to exceed 70 km/h on this section of the motorway! There is no doubt that the French champion radar of flashes will heat up again this summer. As a reminder, any speeding over 5 km/h results in the withdrawal of at least one point on the driving license and the offender must pay a fine, the amount of which can vary from 68 to 1,500 euros depending on the speed recorded.
