Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson on taxing tourists in Sweden: “Pretty bad idea”

That several of Sweden’s municipalities sometimes experience a load during the tourist seasons is something Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) says she understands. However, she is skeptical about a possible tourist tax.

– Many municipalities are also happy about tourism. It creates jobs and favors entrepreneurship in smaller towns, says the finance minister to SVT.

    Various forms of tourist taxes already exist around Europe, but not in Sweden. Now the issue has begun to be taken up seriously around the country and it looks set to become a watershed.

    According to a survey conducted by SVT, 11 of Sweden’s 22 most popular tourist municipalities respond that they are positive about introducing some form of taxation for visitors.
