When a keyboard is neglected for years but used daily, a lot of debris accumulates – especially with pets.
How much hair can collect under the keys? Many, even countless, intertwined tufts. With dust and other dirt, they created a special kind of biotope right under the fingertips. The user Starforcraft posted his discovery on his desk at home in a subreddit as a warning to everyone: “Reminder, please clean your keyboards.”
What does the second photo show (click on the arrow on the right in the Reddit window)? The apparent photo of the cleaned keyboard is misleading, as Starforcraft admits in the comments below: It simply shows the keyboard before he took the keys off. An effective showcase of how deceptively clean a keyboard can look – only when you lift the keys does the true extent of the dirt become apparent.
What is the user puzzling over? The user is not only astonished by the sight because he probably didn’t expect such dirt. No, the hair itself also confuses him. He does have a cat, but it only sleeps on his chair and not directly on the keyboard.
The user MSD3k solves the puzzle concretely and seems to be very experienced in such situations: cat hair does not need a physically logical way to reach a place. It teleports itself directly from the cat to an unpleasant place of your choice.
What else does Reddit say?
Aside from the comment quoted above, several other people have also commented on the topic – some with tips. Others see it as a pragmatic bonus feature of the keyboard thanks to the pet.
Is dirt under the keys bad? This usually doesn’t affect the functionality of the keyboard, as long as there are no blocking, bulky, hard lumps. But such accumulations of hair, crumbs and grease are the ideal breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and fungi. In short: clean your keyboards regularly, especially if you eat and drink nearby.
Reddit regularly features strange stories from the world of computer hardware that can scare gamers. On MeinMMO we reported on a user who reached for a screwdriver because of problems with his RTX 4090. In the end, the answer was found in exactly what he didn’t find there, because something fundamental had been forgotten in the factory.
