Netflix ends huge series universe – but the last episode drives fans crazy

Netflix ends huge series universe – but the last episode

Germans have had a new favorite series on Netflix for a few days now and it’s called Vikings: Valhalla. The Vikings spin-off quickly climbed to number 1 in the streaming service’s series charts and both many fans and critics are largely positive about the season. But the last episode is driving some people up the wall.

Netflix concludes the Vikings universe – but ends far too openly

With Vikings: Valhalla, not only does the series come to an end in its third season – the series ends the entire Vikings universe. The parent series started in 2011 with the now iconic main characters Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick). Vikings ran for 6 seasons, Valhalla only 3 seasons and is the only spin-off of the extremely successful historical epic. The very last episodes have been available since July 11th.

The loose ends in Vikings: Vahalla Season 3: In the finale of we follow the three spin-off main characters one last time. These are the two siblings Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson) and Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett) as well as Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter).

In the series finale, Freydis sets off to find their son without Harald, but we do not see a reunion between Freydis and her son. Harald ultimately prevails on the throne – so his story ends at an important point. But Harald neither gets to know his child nor can he resolve the conflict with Erik.

“All ends are hanging in the air” writes a fan in the official discussion thread about the series finale on Reddit. Another Reddit member sums up the disappointment:

They really should just one more episode to reunite Freydis with her son and Stigr, for a final confrontation with Erik the Red and to discover Canada with Leif. […] It all came down to this and then it was just over.

Leif’s story in particular falls short of fans’ expectations.

Leif’s missing ending drives Vikings: Valhalla fans completely mad

Leif’s missing ending is particularly striking. Many fans are already At the beginning we went into the series with the expectationto see him standing in Newfoundland at the end. Because of all the characters in the series, Leif Erikson is probably the most famous even today – his historical role model was the first European on the American mainland, today’s Newfoundland in Canada.

Vikings: Valhalla seems to be leading up to this, but it is left out entirely at the end. We only see Leif getting on a boat in Europe. One Reddit member is extremely disappointed:

All I wanted to see was them coming to Newfoundland. The whole series is preparing for that. They have not even a short shot shown from a nice green wooded bank in the distance. I was robbed. Worst series ending ever.

In the discussion thread on Reddit specifically about the final episode, some fans also regret what they see as a broken promise. Many write that the season was really good, but ended far too soon. One fan says:

The ending was awful. I love the rest of the series, but I’m so disappointed with how it ends with Leif and Freydis.

Many were prepared to say goodbye to the Vikings universe with Leif and the “Golden Land”. no further Vikings series planned and Valhalla is the conclusion of the extremely popular series universe for now, the disappointment seems even more bitter. Perhaps Netflix will give a final film like it did with the Viking saga The Last Kingdom, but so far there is no indication of this.
