Students demonstrating in Bangladesh have called for a “total shutdown” after protests turned violent this week.

Several people have been killed and hundreds injured in recent days in clashes with police and other students, who have the support of the ruling party.

The call for a “complete shutdown” has been heard in many parts of the capital Dhaka, where the streets are basically empty and many shopping malls remain closed. According to the demonstrators, the shutdown is a response to the security services’ violence against demonstrators.

The students have been protesting for weeks against a quota system for government jobs. According to the demonstrators, the system favors those allied with the ruling party.
