Anyone who has been inactive for too long in New World will soon lose their character name

The developers of New World are preparing for the upcoming launch on consoles on October 15, 2024. A recently announced measure by Amazon Games is now causing a bad mood.

What did the developers announce? Via X, Amazon Games has announced that it wants to implement a new measure for the upcoming console launch in order to offer players who are new to New World Aeternum more choice when searching for a name:

  • The following change will come into effect on October 15, 2024: After six months, the names of characters who have been inactive for at least six months will be made available for new characters. This will of course also apply to all characters who have not been online for six months before October 15, 2024.
  • When a player creates a new character starting October 15, 2024, they can choose an expired name.
  • In this case, the owner of the inactive character will have to choose a new name the next time he logs in. The “Play” button will be replaced by “Rename” accordingly.
  • If you want to secure your character names, you must log in with the character in question before October 15, 2024.

    “This is so frustrating”

How does the community react to the announcement? There are already numerous comments from disappointed, angry or frustrated X users under the developers’ post.

  • Flannel (Muscle) Mommy writes (via X): “I feel like 6 months is a very short period of time considering the DLC came out over 9 months ago. I think that should be changed to a year. I feel like the players who haven’t played in 6 months will come back, while the players who haven’t played in a year probably won’t come back.”
  • Aaron Miller criticizes Amazon Games (via X): “This is so frustrating. Your game has so much potential to be one of the best MMOs. And yet we’re stuck here with such a terrible studio that doesn’t listen to any of its player base. I love your game, but all you do is push us away. In fact, I’d actually prefer New World to FFXIV, but you’re so incompetent.”
  • Tarellion compares the situation to WoW (via X): “This is NOT the right path or something you should be focusing on. I have WoW characters that haven’t been touched in years and they still have their names, as they should. Your game will never thrive if you focus on these things.”
  • What does our MMORPG expert Karsten Scholz say about the announcement? I can understand the community’s anger. Character names are sacred and the time window is indeed unusually short. I almost get the feeling that Amazon Games is trying to force PC players to download the game and log in – maybe a few percent will stick around.

However, thanks to the announcement and articles like this one, you now know what’s going on and can act accordingly. Log into New World sometime in the coming weeks, secure the names you want to keep, and you’re done. No stress.

What can I expect from New World Aeternum on October 15th? The new version of the MMORPG not only brings the console ports for Xbox Series and PlayStation 5, it also brings a lot of new content and adjustments to the servers – including a 10-player raid, solo trials, archetypes and an extensive PvP zone.

Anyone who owns the base game and the expansion “Rise of the Angry Earth” will receive the upgrade to Aeternum for free. Anyone else interested will have to budget 60 to 80 euros for the purchase. New World Aeternum: All information about the launch of the DLC on PS5 and XBOX – release, map and content
