Football: Gareth Southgate resigns as England captain

Gareth Southgate has been England manager since 2016. He has led the team in 102 caps and taken them to two European Championship finals, a bronze medal at the 2018 World Cup and the quarter-finals in 2022.

But the European Championship final, which England lost to Spain 1–2, was his last as a coach.

– As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for and coach England, says Southgate in a press release.

– But it is time for a change, and a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my last game as England manager.

The English Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham writes in a statement that they are grateful for the work of Gareth Southgate and his partner Steve Holland.

– We are proud of everything Gareth and Steve have achieved, and will be eternally grateful, writes Bullingham.

The union is now working to find a successor “as soon as possible”.
