The result would be a new record for Kagame.
President of Rwanda Paul Kagame is extending his reign for another five years. According to the National Electoral Authority, on Monday, Kagame was getting more than 99 percent of the votes in the presidential election, after 79 percent of the votes had been counted.
The result would be a new record for Kagame, after the previous top result in 2017 was 98.8 percent. He has previously been elected in every election with more than 90 percent of the vote.
Kagame has been the de facto ruler of his country since the end of the 1994 genocide and president since 2000. The result did not come as a surprise, as Kagame’s administration has been widely criticized for silencing the media and opposition in his homeland.
The two counter-candidates of the sitting president are both falling well below one percent of the vote.
Shortly after the results were announced, Kagame thanked Rwandans. The final results will be published on July 27.
