The 20-year-old who is suspected of trying to kill Donald Trump is believed to have acted alone – but his motive remains unclear.
The ex-president himself has arrived in Milwaukee the day after the crime, where he is expected to become the Republicans’ official presidential candidate.
Earlier on Sunday evening, Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social that he had initially intended to postpone his trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
“However, I have decided that I cannot allow a ‘shooter’ or potential killer to force changes to the schedule,” the former president wrote.
On Sunday evening local time, less than 24 hours after the crime, Trump landed at the Milwaukee airport.
It was at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday that a shooter opened fire in what police are investigating as an assassination attempt on Trump. Trump suffered an ear injury and was led bleeding from the stage by his bodyguards.
A bystander in the audience, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, was killed. Two more men, a 57-year-old and a 74-year-old, were seriously injured but are now said to be in a stable condition.
The shooter was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who lived in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was shot dead at the scene after the crime.
According to the FBI, Crooks acted alone, but his motive remains unclear.
– At this time we have not identified an ideology associated with the shooter, but I want to remind everyone that it is still very early in this investigation, said Kevin Rojek of the FBI, reports ABC News.
