The number of women with iron deficiency more than doubled after five months of basic training in the military, new research shows, reports P4 Gothenburg.

Women with iron deficiency increased from 25 percent to 55 percent after five months of military basic training. One reason for the increase is high physical activity, the study shows.

– The iron can be used up very quickly under these conditions that you have in basic education, says Ingrid Larsson, docent in clinical nutrition at Gothenburg University and dietitian at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, to the radio.

She is a co-author of the study, which was done in collaboration with, among others, the University of Gymnastics and Sports, GIH.

According to the researchers, the defense should pay attention to people with iron deficiency so that women’s health does not deteriorate.

– You get less performance, the ability to concentrate can be affected. These parts are incredibly important when doing this training, she says.
