One day before the European Championship final, you don’t have to worry about football, but can instead watch a highly entertaining action film on TV. White House Down is reminiscent of a very similar, much more successful film with Gerard Butler, which has now become a whole series.
Action blockbuster on Saturday on TV: This is what White House Down is about
The story is very similar to that of Olympus Has Fallen. In White House Down, the eponymous White House in Washington, DC overrun by terrorists. Fortunately, there is only one man left who can protect the President of the United States of America: Channing Tatum as ex-cop and security professional John Cale.
Fortunately, he happened to be in the White House for a job interview as Bodyguard of the US President. Although he didn’t officially get the new job, he generously steps in to save James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx).

White House Down was better than Olympus Has Fallen, but less successful
In White House Down, the chemistry between Foxx and Tatum is just right and overall the action thriller is simply better match the atmosphere and charm of the great role model Die Hard. Director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) also ensures that it is a real blast and bombastic film. White House Down also comes out on top in the Moviepilot community ratings.
Although Gerard Butler’s Olympus Has Fallen failed to make more money ($170 million on a $70 million budget) than White House Down ($205 million on a $150 million budget), the numbers are obviously better relative to the budget (via Box Office Mojo). White House Down went down in film history as a flop, while Olympus Has Fallen spawned a thriving franchise. The next installment, Night Has Fallen, is already in the works.
Even more, but then completely different action is coming to cinemas soon. Gladiator 2 is casting its long shadow and after the first trailer there are countless enthusiastic and surprisingly dirty reactions to what has been seen so far.
