The story of The Substance revolves around film star Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), who was once part of Hollywood’s A-list, but the best years of her career are long behind her. The provisional low point is reached when she is fired as host of her own fitness show on her 50th birthday.
At that very moment she receives a mysterious offer: A new drug is supposed to give her the opportunity to play at the top of the dream factory again. Just one injection and Elisabeth wakes up in the body of the young Sue (Margaret Qualley). But it doesn’t take long before some unwanted side effects set in.

New horror thriller: When will The Substance be released in cinemas?
The streaming service Mubi has secured the distribution rights for The Substance and will release the film on 19 September 2024 in German cinemas. In recent years, Mubi has delighted audiences with an outstanding selection of films, ranging from Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla to the indie masterpiece Aftersun.
