Several properties were affected by the flooding in Jönköping

During Wednesday, the entire county had around 200 events connected to the storm.

The floods affected not only private individuals but also the municipality itself. The municipality’s garage was filled with water up to a meter high and it was unclear on Wednesday whether the cars parked there would survive without damage.

During Friday, Berger can announce that everything went well after all.

– The cars in the garage made it and the water has been pumped out now, he tells Nyheter24.

The municipality is now working to go around and get a picture of the situation.

Thomas Bergholmtechnical director for Jönköping municipality, says that the work continues.

– A number of private property owners have received water in various ways and also around 35 municipal buildings are affected. Monitoring of the flows in waterways is ongoing as there is some delay in this problem. Planning is underway to deal with the possible weather warning that SMHI flagged for this weekend.

Nyheter24 has contacted the Norwegian Agency for Community Safety and Preparedness (MSB) to find out how private individuals can prevent and make things easier for themselves in the event of a flood.

MSB: Checklist in case of risk of flooding

Anna Wennerströmpress officer at MSB, has sent a checklist on how to prepare.

  • Check what your home insurance says about damage caused by flooding.
  • Make an evacuation plan and think about what you need to take with you and where you would go.
  • Keep in touch with the neighbors. You may need to help each other.
  • Place the car on a high place.
  • Seal basement windows and ventilation openings.
  • Build a temporary barrier of sand or earth – it can stop a minor flood.
  • Move furniture and electrical appliances higher up in the house or place them on some kind of riser.
  • Take pictures of the rooms in the house to be able to show the insurance company if necessary.
  • Follow the news reporting in the media.
  • Have the mobile phone fully charged.
  • Block floor drains and toilet seats with sandbags or similar. If the drains are flooded, water can come up that way.
  • Turn off the power with the main power switch.
  • If the flood has already occurred, Wennerström recommends that you avoid walking or driving near the areas where the water is.

    – Half a meter of flowing water can be enough to knock you over or cause the car to drift away, she tells Nyheter24.

It is also important to stay in a high place where you can be picked up by rescue personnel in the event that the flood should come suddenly while you are outside.
