One of Twitch’s shadiest guys is being celebrated as a hero – says he doesn’t deserve it

The internet has just found an unusual hero in Twitch streamer Richard “FaZe Banks” Bengston. But he is not at all happy about all the fuss.

What kind of guy is this? Richard “Ricky” Bengston, better known as “Banks,” is the founder of one of the largest e-sports organizations in the world, the FaZe Clan. Instead of sporting success, the FaZe Clan focuses primarily on cool content creators.

This gives the organization a huge presence on social media, but it doesn’t always present itself in a good light.

Banks himself hangs out with troubled Kick streamer Adin Ross (via X) and had a video of him discussing a “crypto controversy” sponsored by controversial online casino Stake (via X), so he’s not exactly the kind of guy you’d think of when you hear the word “hero.”

However, that changed when he helped a member of the FaZe Clan in a crisis.

Twitch streamer Lacy is also a member of the FaZe Clan. Here you can see him in action.

Why was he declared a hero now? The issue was FaZe streamer Sketch, who had experienced a fairytale rise on Twitch in 2024. In July, a YouTuber made the streamer’s past public: Sketch is said to have distributed homosexual, explicit content on the OnlyFans payment platform.

Sketch later said in a stream that the fear of his past coming to light had been hanging over him for a long time. In case it did become known, he had a “not very good” plan.

When pictures from his previous job went viral, Sketch left the FaZe house, apparently leaving his glasses and a pair of shoes behind, and headed for the airport. It cannot be ruled out that the streamer wanted to harm himself, or was thinking about it.

However, Banks stood by Sketch in a post on X: “All the FaZe guys were there for him last night. Sketch was my homie yesterday, he’s my homie today, and he’ll be my homie tomorrow.” He also posted a chat thread in which he encouraged the streamer to come back to the house and gave him some encouragement.

In a stream, Sketch later thanked Banks explicitly. If he had been home alone, he might not be talking to his fans now, said the streamer. For many, it was clear: the FaZe founder basically saved Sketch’s life. Fans called him a hero on social media – but he doesn’t really feel comfortable with that.

What does he say about this? In another post on X, Banks explains that the “‘hero’ comments and the ‘you saved his life’ crap” are “moderately uncomfortable.” He doesn’t feel like he’s worthy of praise, he just did what he would want any halfway decent person to do.

The events surrounding Sketch reminded him again why he broke away from all that “internet bullshit” in the first place. People are so obsessed with approval and likes that they would put so much pressure on someone that they would actually consider taking their own life.

Banks concludes: “Yesterday could have been a much darker day and I just thank God it went the other way.” You can see the whole post here:
