The Canary Islands are fed up with the uncivilized behavior of tourists from the Spanish mainland.
With a bold advertising campaign, they now only want to attract responsible visitors.
“The islands are not for everyone”, says a large banner in Madrid.
In Puerta del Sol in Madrid, a large banner has been erected that stretches across three facades. We want to alert potential visitors from the Spanish mainland to what applies when visiting the Canary Islands.
The banner reads: “The islands are not for everyone”.
The campaign was created to prevent “uncivilized behavior” and to promote sustainable tourism.
“We strive to communicate in a friendly and educational way that the Canary Islands have a unique and very sensitive biological diversity. We welcome all visitors who respect our environment,” says Jessica de León, the Minister of Tourism for the Canary Islands to Canarian Weekly.
“The type of tourists we want to attract”
In addition to the central banner, the campaign will be visible at bus shelters and numerous digital signs throughout Madrid.
And as a complement to the campaign there are also additional messages:
“If you enjoy the beach without leaving a trace, welcome to the Canary Islands” and “If you follow the rules, welcome to the Canary Islands”.
Jessica de León emphasizes that the campaign is not intended to create guilt.
“We focus on the type of tourists we want to attract, which are those who value our unique landscapes, traditions and way of life,” she says.
