Chaos in Paris after the French election

Adjacent to the Place de la République, a classic home for countless political demonstrations and protests, police have used tear gas to disperse crowds where some people threw projectiles and started fires, reports Le Figaro.

A larger group of more peaceful protesters remain at the statue in the middle of the square, waving French flags and shouting slogans to defend the retirement age, according to the newspaper’s reporter on the scene.

No absolute majority

The far-right National Gathering (RN), which was the largest in the first round of elections, looks set for defeat in the second round.

According to polling polls presented after the polls closed in France, the left-wing alliance New People’s Front (NFP) looks set to be the largest. According to the forecast, President Emmanuel Macron’s center alliance Ensemble looks to be second and the National Assembly (RN) third.

The forecast shows an even race, no group seems to get an absolute majority.
