Vacation? This is how home insurance works in the event of a burglary

Vacation This is how home insurance works in the event

During the summer, many people take time off from work and take the opportunity to travel. It also means an increased risk of burglary.

If you are going to be away from your home for a longer period of time, you can choose to rent out your apartment via online advertisements, which is however not completely risk-free.

News24 have previously written about how home insurance applies in the event that the renter steals or destroys something in the apartment. Since the apartment owner has given permission and keys to the renter, home insurance does not apply.

Then the home insurance applies during the holiday – and you should watch out for this

Peter Starklawyer and sustainability manager at Konsumenternanas, however, tells us that some damage caused by the renter can be covered by home insurance.

– Home insurance basically applies to damage from fire and water, but it can be more difficult to prove an accident, says Stark to Nyheter24.

If you have not rented out and left your home empty, there are still certain requirements for you to obtain home insurance in the event of a burglary.

– If you have not lent or rented your home, the home insurance applies to burglary, that is, if the perpetrator has forcibly entered the locked home and stolen things, says Stark and continues:

– As a victim, you must always “prove” that it was a break-in by an outside unauthorized perpetrator. It is therefore easiest to get compensation if the intrusion has left traces, for example a broken door or broken window.

The insurance companies flirted hard: Then there will be no compensation

The insurance companies are not entirely easy to convince either. According to Stark, an open window can lead to the home insurance no longer being valid.

– If the thief got in without leaving traces of the break-in, it can be trickier, for example if the thief got in through a window that was left open.

Being able to provide proof is essential to being able to take advantage of your home insurance in the event of a burglary.

– And it seems that the thief got in by picking the door lock, the insurance companies can often just as well consider that the thief had his own key and there will then be no compensation, Peter Stark tells Nyheter24.
