The Targaryen family tree explained (without future spoilers)

The Targaryen family tree explained without future spoilers

In the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, the Targaryens rule Westeros. In season 2, however, a civil war breaks out within the family over the Iron Throne. On one side are the “Blacks” of Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), the only daughter and declared heir to the throne from the first marriage of the previous King Viserys. On the other side, the “Greens” around Alicent High tower (Olivia Cooke), second wife and dowager queen, who declared her and Viserys’ eldest son Aegon II king.

Who is related to whom and how can quickly become confusing. Especially when the children of the brown-haired Alicent are blonde and the first (illegitimate) sons of the white-blonde Rhaenyra are dark-haired. Our Targaryen family tree for season 1 already held you spoiler-free from episode to episode about the family relationships. In season 2, we will follow the deaths, births, weddings and successions to the throne in a similar way. Because if you read the complete Targaryen overview in George RR Martin’s book Fire and Blood *, you will often find out more than you wanted in advance.

This House of the Dragon article features:

  • Targaryen family tree before episode 1 of season 2
  • Targaryen family tree according to episodes 1, 2 and 3 of season 2
  • House of the Dragon: The Targaryen family tree at the beginning of season 2 (before episode 1)

The second season of House of the Dragon picks up right after the finale of season 1: Rhaenyra’s second son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) was killed by his cousin Aemond (or rather his dragon). In addition, Rhaenyra and Daemon’s newest daughter was stillborn in episode 10. So the family has lost two children.

Although more characters are sent to their deaths in episodes 2 and 3 of House of the Dragon, this does not change the black and green Targaryen family tree in the next episodes. At least for now, because new revelations about the family relationships are imminent in season 2.
