The M HYBRID power unit in the new BMW M5 plug-in hybrid combines a 4.4-liter V8 unit that works like a naturally aspirated internal combustion engine with high-revving characteristics, with an electric motor integrated into the specially developed 8-speed M Steptronic transmission that offers linear transmission performance. The internal combustion engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology produces 585 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque on its own. The electric motor on the transmission, on the other hand, produces 197 horsepower and 280 Nm, and thanks to a front gear stage, it can increase its effect on the transmission input to 450 Nm according to the preferred driving mode and user character.
Developed for long endurance races, this engine works on the same principle as the BMW M Hybrid V8 Endurance racing car drive system, and responds to accelerator pedal movements without delay. The unit, which can reach a maximum engine speed of 7,200 rpm, reaches a maximum speed of 250 km/h as standard, while it can reach a speed of 305 km/h when the M Driving Package is selected. The sports exhaust system on the new BMW M5 plug-in hybrid draws attention with its impressive sound and four 100 mm black chrome-plated, M model-specific outlets and a diffuser that contributes to the car’s wind direction in terms of aerodynamics.
“The new BMW M5, which offers zero-emission driving thanks to M HYBRID technology, is equipped with the exclusive BMW IconicSounds Electric to warn the environment when driving on electric power. This sound provides authentic responses to movements of the accelerator pedal when the vehicle is operating in fully electric mode. With the drive system configuration, it also produces an impressive sound that highlights the additional electric power coming into play in addition to the power of the V8 engine.”
