On Tuesday, Holland advanced to the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship. They beat Romania 3-0 and will face the winner of the match later in the evening in the next stage.
The winning goal was already scored in the first half of the match, when the attacker Cody Gakpo created a position for himself with clever deflections and finally shot the ball into the net from the front corner.
– Individual skills and a great shot. It is difficult for the goalkeeper to predict the direction of the shot from the lateral movement. In the past, he has shot into the back corner, Urheilu’s expert Toni Korkeakunnas described.
In the second half, Gakpo put the ball in the goal after a corner kick, but the shot was rejected for offside. After many lost places, Holland’s victory was sealed Donyell Malen, who struck twice in the final minutes. Gakpo assisted one of the goals.
Gakpo, 25, represents Liverpool at the club level, who bought him from the Dutch premier league. He scored a modest eight goals in 35 matches in the Premier League this season.
In the national team, the attacker has been more effective. Gakpo, who debuted in 2021, has played 28 national matches and scored 12 goals in them. There is a convincing detail in the statistic, as Gakpo has never scored a goal in a friendly match. So all 12 goals are from competitive matches.
Holland has scored six goals in the EC tournament, of which Gakpo has completed half. He shares the top spot in the goalscoring market with Germany Jamal Musialan as well as already relegated Georgia Georges Mikautadzen and Slovakia By Ivan Schranz with.
Gakpo reached the same three-goal balance in the previous World Championships. In addition to these, he has scored a total of four goals in the World Cup and European Championship qualifiers and two in the Nations League.
Holland returns to the quarter-finals of the European Championship after 16 years. The last time it was among the eight was in the summer of 2008. Staying in the group stage in 2012 broke the streak of six games, during which Holland was always at least in the quarterfinals, four times in the semifinals, and once also champion.
– Holland was excellent now. Crazy football. They have a great structure in attack, players in the right positions and great movement. I enjoyed watching this, Korkeakunnas said in the halftime studio of the quarterfinals.
In the previous tournament, Holland was eliminated in the quarterfinals by losing to the Czech Republic 0–2. In 2016, it was completely out of the final tournament.
In European football, the last place in the group of eight is now undivided. Austria and Turkey meet in the last match of the quarterfinals at 10 p.m.
