Coin uses Katniss as a propaganda tool. The unlikely heroine is supposed to inspire the followers of the revolution and lead them into war. Katniss herself fights with the traumatic experiences the Hunger Games. Last but not least, their ally, Peter Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), is in the hands of the Capitol.
Mockingjay Part 1 is by far the most hopeless part of the series. We spend most of the time in dimly lit bunkers or move through the ruins of war zones. Uncomfortable political questions are the driving force of the story, while the characters become alienated from themselves.
At the end of the film there is a cliffhanger that is so profound that you wonder how it even found its way into a mainstream blockbuster. Mockingjay Part 1 not only tears Katniss, but also us as viewers, apart in the last seconds. the ground beneath your feet and just makes you tremble.
