Mohamed Ould Ghazouani re-elected, according to official provisional results

In Mauritania, the Independent National Electoral Commission (Céni) formalized the provisional results which could already be seen on its website. Seven candidates were in the running. It confirms the victory of outgoing president Mohamed Ould Ghazouani with just over 56% of the votes and 55.39% participation.

The CENI announces: outgoing president Mohamed Ould Ghazouani is re-elected for a second term at the head of the country.

With a little more than 56% of votes according to the provisional results after the counting of all the ballots, the current head of state obtained an absolute majority in the first round.

The opponent Biram Dah Abeid comes in second position as in the last presidential election, but this time with a little more than 22% of the votes compared to 19% in 2019. He declared the day before, during a conference of press, that he would not recognize the results of the Céni which he accuses of being exploited by the power and denounces electoral fraud.

For his part, the Islamist candidate of Tawassoul, the leading opposition party in the National Assembly, Hamadi Ould Sidi El Mokhtar, came third with slightly less than 13% of the vote (12.78%).

The other candidates only achieved scores below 4%: lawyer El Id Mohameden came 4th with 3.57% of the vote, followed by AJDMR candidate Mamadou Bocar Ba and professor Outouma Soumaré who obtained just over 2% of the vote. Finally, Mohamed Lemine El Wavi, a former presidential candidate, did not exceed 1% (0.98%).

These provisional results must still be sent for validation to the Constitutional Council after examination of possible appeals.
