Grey’s Anatomy starts with a shortened 20th season on Disney+
Grey Sloan Hospital in Seattle has us back: Season 20, Episode 1 (titled: We’ve Only Just Begun) is now available to stream on Disney+ and Joyn. In addition to the old hands around Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), who keep the hospital running, the five young doctors in particular have to face the consequences of their actions and after a long wait we find out whether Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) survived the season 19 finale.

Grey’s Anatomy’s young doctors are back in season 20
Anyone who thought that they would have to do without the main character Meredith Grey after Ellem Pompeo’s departure will be surprised. Whether it is a clever move or a disappointing act of desperation by Grey’s Anatomy: The series’ title character will remain with us in season 20 as a frequent guest star and narrator. There is just one major change. Season 20 has only 10 episodes.
The change explained: Why does Grey’s Anatomy only have 10 episodes in season 20?
Grey’s Anatomy usually had a season length of around 20 to 24 episodes. The record holder is season 2 with 27 episodes. The shortest season so far was the first with 9 episodes. This year’s return with its 10 episodes will be the second shortest season in the history of the series.
But why was Grey’s Anatomy reduced so much this time? The reason for this is the Hollywood strike by the acting and screenwriting unions last summer. As a result of the strike, the series could not be written and filmed in the usual way (with a US launch in the fall). Due to the delayed start of production after the end of the strike, Meredith and Co. did not return in the USA until six months later than usual, in March 2024.
