The Pantanal wetland is known for its very rich fauna and flora.
The Pantanal wetlands in southeastern Brazil have seen more wildfires in June than at any time since monitoring began in 1998.
In June, 2,500 fires have already been recorded, although the actual wildfire season only starts in July.
Most of the fires are started by residents when they are clearing land for crops. Fires are lit, although it is prohibited during the dry season from July to September.
Lightning also ignites fires that are difficult to put out because the fires may smolder below the surface of the earth.
The Pantanal’s dry season is expected to be very difficult. The approximately 200,000 square kilometer Pantanal wetland gets its water from the Paraguay River, whose surface is very low even though the dry season hasn’t really started yet.
