Ansbach is one of the new NPCs in the Elden Ring DLC. In this guide we will show you how to complete his quest and summon him at the final boss.
Where can you find Ansbach? The Ansbach quest starts shortly after the start of the DLC. Provided you head towards Belurat Castle. In front of the entrance you will find the place of grace “Cross at the main gate”, and next to it the NPC you are looking for.
There is also one of the valuable Scadu Tree fragments here. Be sure to collect it to strengthen your character and speak to Ansbach. He will explain to you that his proud days as a warrior are over.

Solve Ansbach Quest – All Steps
What are the next steps? When you reach Scadu Altus, the Great Rune will break, which you will notice by a loud noise. You will also receive a notification about this.
Return to Ansbach and speak to him again. He will then go to the Shadow Keep.
Find Ansbach in the Schattenbergfried
Where is Ansbach next? Fight your way through the large legacy dungeon to the place of grace “Warehouse, ground floor”. From there, ignore the passage on the left and follow the narrow level up the stairs to the first mezzanine floor. There, a few steps lead to a room where Ansbach is waiting for you.
He studies a book and talks to you. Use all dialogue options. This completes this step.
Find Secret Rite Scroll
Where do you find the scroll? This item is essential for progressing the quest. You will find the scroll if you climb further up in the Shadow Keep and find the Place of Mercy “Warehouse, Third Floor”.
There is another Scadu tree fragment and an item there. It is a letter from Ansbach. Take it, continue west and then up the stairs in the southeast. Clear the enemies out of the way or run past them. Then on the left there is a staircase leading down. Take the next door and enter a room with some bookshelves.
There you will find the scroll you are looking for. Take it. You now have the choice of whether to give it to Ansbach or not. If you decide not to, the quest will not continue. We therefore recommend giving Ansbach his scroll. But wait a moment before doing so, otherwise you may miss another NPC.
Find Freya
On the sixth floor of the Shadow Keep, you will meet the NPC Freya at the Place of Mercy. Her quest is connected to Ansbach’s. Speak to her and then return to Ansbach. To unlock the next step of the quest, you must rest at a place of mercy.
Hand over letter to Freya
The next time you speak to Ansbach, he will give you a letter to Freya. Take it back to the sixth floor and talk to Freya a few more times. Once all dialogue options have been exhausted, you will receive the Golden Lion Shield.
Once you have talked to her, you can return to Ansbach on the first floor one last time to give him his scroll.
Defend or fight Ansbach against Leda
How does the quest continue? Travel to the place of grace “Cross on the High Street”. There, speak to Leda, who will tell you that she wants to kill Ansbach. You can help her – if you want.
Return to the Shadow Keep and go to the room where Ansbach was standing. He has now disappeared and there are two summoning tokens on the floor. Here you can decide to support either Leda or Ansbach in the fight against the other.
If you help Leda, Ansbach’s quest ends here and he will no longer be available later. If you help him, however, you can call on him for help with later bosses. If you want to make your life easier, we recommend this option.
Attention: This step can only be completed if you have previously helped Leda against the Horn Herald. In addition, Messmer in the Shadow Keep must not be dead yet.
The end of the quest
How does Ansbach’s quest end? If you help the guy, you will receive Ansbach’s Longbow and Leda’s Rune, which is always worth 40,000 runes.
After you burn the Scadu tree, the quest enters its final phase. Note that you must also complete any other NPC quests before this point, otherwise some may fail.
Shortly before the final boss, Leda and her allies will stand in your way again. Here you can summon Ansbach for help for the first time.
Summon Ansbach at the final boss
Your efforts will also pay off when you defeat the expansion’s big final boss. After defeating Leda, you’ll meet Ansbach and can talk to him. Once you’ve done that, you can also call on the NPC for help in the final boss fight.
If he’s lying dead in the dust, some of your nerves are probably more than frayed. It’s good that there’s a reward at least. After the fight, you’ll find Ansbach’s body in the arena. You can loot his equipment and the Obsidian Lamina weapon from him.
