The interns are demanding a 35% increase in their salary, to compensate for the austerity of the 2010s. Sumi Manirajan is an obstetrician and representative of the BMA union at the origin of the mobilization: “ A newly qualified doctor earns 15 £ per hour (around 18 €). I graduated in 2021 and I saw my colleagues, the friends I studied with, leave the country to go to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, where they are paid properly. Those who stay find themselves with even more work and become exhausted. »

Maintain the pressure

This is the eleventh time young doctors go on strike in less than two years. The negotiations are not moving forward. This young psychiatrist feels “ exhausted… We don’t like to strike. Our colleagues are accommodating, but we know that it adds pressure to everyone. We would like to stop, but we feel like we have no other choice. »

On the bridge in front of the hospital, patients displayed a banner in support of the strikers. Hope Worsdale had surgery at the start of the year: “ The caregivers were great, but I could see that they were under pressure. They don’t have the time, resources, or ability to do their job properly. However, the working conditions of caregivers are the conditions in which patients are treated. »

One week before the elections, doctors consider the promises of the major parties in terms of health to be insufficient.
