The launch of My Lady Jane on Amazon Prime Video * is well chosen: Two weeks ago, season 3 of Bridgerton ended on Netflix. The start of season 4 is still two years away, leaving a large gap in the streaming demand for romantic entertainment. But now a new heroine is on the scene: Lady Jane.
What is Amazon’s Bridgerton replacement My Lady Jane about?
In the 16th century, the hand of young Jane (Emily Bader) is sold by her ambitious mother Lady Frances Grey (Anna Chancellor) to the highest bidder Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel). But no matter how attractive the stranger is to her “Lust at first sight” is: Jane is at all not enthusiastic about the arranged marriage. Especially not when her future husband is surrounded by a secret that could cost her life too. In addition, her cousin, the English King Edward, is to be murdered as part of a conspiracy. It is clear that the sharp-tongued Jane must take her fate into her own hands.

My Lady Jane has a lot in common with Bridgerton, although there are about 300 years between them: Both are American series set in historical England and both rewrite British history in an aristocratic context with romantic twists. While Bridgerton’s Queen Charlotte opens up society to more diversity as a black queen, the Amazon series takes on the real person of Lady Jane Grey as a model for an alternative history. The real noblewoman was beheaded a few days after her coronation as queen. While names like Guildford Dudley are correct, the series exempts Lady Jane from her tragic fate.
Amazon publishes all eight Episodes of My Lady Jane at onceThe series is based on the novel of the same name * by authors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows. It is the first of three-part Anthology series The Lady Janies. If the series is successful, more books would be available.
