The Elden Ring DLC includes numerous new weapons, including a category that Monster Hunter fans are currently excited about, as players see it as a clear reference to their favorite monster game.
What new types of weapons are there? The DLC Shadow of the Erdtree includes a huge game world, over 40 new bosses and new NPCs, as well as a whole truckload of new weapons.
There are eight new weapon categories alone. These include light great swords, beast claws, throwing weapons and thrusting shields. But it is another new type of weapon that is currently causing a stir. The great katanas have caught the attention of Monster Hunter fans.
Both the attack patterns and the animations remind them of their favorite game – and that is probably no coincidence.

A successful allusion
What did the fans discover? The great katanas from the Elden Ring DLC bear a striking resemblance to the long swords from Monster Hunter – and they are popular. Now you might assume that katana-like weapons quickly resemble each other. However, if you look at a side-by-side comparison, it becomes clear that the animations are almost identical.
X-user @AsagiKurosagi posted a comparison and wrote: “Miyazaki, you madman, I know why you call them great katanas, I see your trick.”
Even when playing the game, real Monster Hunter fans notice the similarity. X-user @Twas_By_Design found the Dragon Hunter Great Katana weapon and tried it out straight away. After just a few seconds, he realized where he knew the attack patterns from. In Monster Hunter, it corresponds to the PS key combination triangle-circle-triangle.
The Dragon Hunter Great Katana shown in the X-User’s clip is a reward for completing the Dragon Pit dungeon in the Graveyard Plain.
This is likely a successful reference and homage to Capcom’s games. And who knows whether clever fans will find even more of it in the Elden Ring DLC.
