There are incidents of violence in the ongoing protests against the tax increase bill in Kenya. Demonstrators in the capital Nairobi broke through the police barrier and stormed the building shortly after the bill was passed in Parliament. Protesters set fire to part of the Parliament building and a security forces vehicle at the entrance. While some of the MPs escaped through the tunnel, the demonstrators allowed opposition MPs who voted against the bill to exit the besieged building.

In the statement made by local sources, it was also stated that the police used tear gas and pressurized water and used real bullets during the intervention. It was stated that at least 5 people lost their lives during the demonstrations, where dozens of protesters were injured. Medical teams treated the injured at the scene.
Demonstrators also set fire to the town hall, where Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s office is located. The police intervened in the flames with pressurized water.
The bill, which caused protests, is planned to revitalize the economy, generate an additional 346.7 billion Kenyan Shillings tax revenue and alleviate the foreign debt.
