EU imposes more sanctions on Hamas and violent settlers | News in brief

The foreign ministers reached a political agreement on sanctions against the extremist organization Hamas and settlers who have targeted Palestinians with violence. Sanctions are also being considered for the Georgian administration.

The EU countries have reached a political agreement on additional sanctions against the extremist organization Hamas and violent Israeli settlers. The matter is explained by the EU’s high representative for external relations Josep Borrell.

Borrell did not provide further information on the content of the sanctions or the entities against which the sanctions are being imposed.

In January, the EU imposed sanctions on Hamas, which ruled Gaza, and another Palestinian extremist organization, Islamic Jihad, over the October 7 attack. In March, sanctions were imposed on residents of Jewish settlements in the West Bank who have participated in violent attacks against Palestinians.

In addition, the war in Ukraine and the situation in Georgia have also been on the agenda of the EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

According to Borrell, the foreign ministers decided to reduce political contacts with Georgia, and the EU is also considering imposing sanctions on the Georgian administration.

The reason is the so-called “law on foreign agents” that entered into force in Georgia in the spring. According to the law, independent media and organizations must declare that they act as promoters of the goals of a foreign power, if more than 20 percent of their funding comes from abroad.
