Currently, about half of the states, 14, have introduced total bans or very strong restrictions and the other part have rather strengthened the right to abortion, says Sanna Torén Björling.

– Where abortion is legal, it has now often been given stronger protection and written into the constitution. There are ongoing processes in several places that have been up in the Supreme Court, a decision is awaited in such a case. The right to abortion is still a very charged topic.

So the issue can influence the election

The abortion issue has had consequences for millions of women who are now forced to find new methods of abortion. Because banning abortions is rarely a way to prevent them, shows the research. Instead, it becomes more dangerous and difficult.

– The women who are in the states where it is prohibited can either travel to a state where it is allowed. But what many people do is order abortion pills online, which is not legal.

It has become a political issue at the same time that people generally do not want a ban on abortion, even many conservatives are against a total ban.

– Clearly, it is a huge question. The president himself cannot do much and this favors the Democrats. They will do everything to lift it. The Republicans are divided and Trump thinks this is very difficult to talk about. Thanks to Trump, abortion rights disappeared and he is happy to take the credit. But he has strong political intuition so he knows he can lose voters on this.
