In Saudi Arabia, more than 1,300 people have died in the heat during this year’s hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Saudi Arabian authorities commented on the casualty figures publicly for the first time on Sunday.

According to the authorities, 1.8 million people have participated in the pilgrimage this year. A total of 1.6 million pilgrims come from abroad.
