“If everything is running, we can go up to at least 14 trains,” said Tom Walter about the July 7, 1-4 pm event in Mooretown he said tend to attract a couple of hundred people every year.

The new layout includes a model grain elevator, coal dump, and an oil pump acquired from Walter’s late friend John Riley, who headed a model train club called Buffers West before he died in 2009, Walter said.

The layout that’s a nod to Lambton’s topography and some local industries has part of its track on the chassis of an antique farm cart, he said.

“It’s kind of a tribute,” he said.

Another layout that had a dinosaur theme has been redone as a tribute to Henry Ford, and another to acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force as an independent military element, he said.

“This is not so much aerospace now as an Air Force museum,” he said about the layout that includes several miniature aircraft models.

Also new this year is an appearance by the Triple-C Carvers of Sarnia, he said.

Information from the museum notes group members will be demonstrating and displaying wood carvings.

“It’ll be the first time for them coming out, so I’m quite looking forward to it,” Walter said.

Controls are set up so kids can run some of the displays, Walter said, noting he’s one of seven people who volunteer to help run the event.

“It’s getting bigger and bigger over the years,” he said about the $6-admission event, $3 for children, since 2013 when two donated layouts proved the impetus for opening the museum’s Lionel Model Train Room.
