Golfer Ursula Wikström finished tied for third place in the Ladies European Tour competition in the Czech Republic. Wikström’s result in the weekend competition was 12 under par.
According to the golf association, Wikström secured his place at the Paris Olympics at the same time. He is currently at number 58 in the Olympic ranking, when there are 60 places. The ranking closes after Sunday’s competitions.
Due to the complicated ranking system, the athlete himself didn’t want to declare the place certain right after the race.
– Yes, I’m excited for so long until the lists come and I see black and white.
A completely new and unfamiliar field awaits him in France. Wikström reminds that it is normal for players to get to know the competition field only during practice rounds. On the other hand, playing in the Olympics is different compared to other competitions.
– Even though we always represent Finland, we represent it in a different way when we put on the Finland clothes and represent our own country. It’s a great honor if you get there.
In addition to Wikström, there are also Finnish women who are going to Paris based on the ranking Noora Komulainenwhich is number 52 in the table.
The Finn sees that his game has been quite good for a long time, but the scores, i.e. the stroke play results, have declined.
– It was really nice to be able to play near the top after a long time. I’ve had a bit of a hard time.
– In my opinion, I haven’t been able to produce what I thought I had to contribute. Now there was a little better scoring. That’s quite a positive thing.
Wikström had a good start to the Czech competition. He regretted the mishap that happened on one of the back fairways, but was satisfied after quickly getting back into the game.
The Royal Berou Golf Club course was already familiar to Wikström, as he has played there a lot. The Finn regretted that the field was not in the best condition after the winter. The conditions also caused challenges in the first days of the competition.
– On the first day there were thunderstorm interruptions and on the second day a strong wind from the morning. Today the conditions were quite optimal, it wasn’t too hot and there was only a very slight breeze, Wikström praised on Sunday.
