Floods are supposed to be a reason for the poisonous snake spreading in Bangladesh. Archive image. Photo: Mahmud Hossain Opu/AP/TT
Panic is spreading in Bangladesh since the poisonous Russell’s viper has been observed in various parts of the country in recent times, writes the Spanish news agency EFE.
All health centers and hospitals in Bangladesh have been ordered to stockpile antidote following reports of an increase in snakebites across the country. Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen urges Bangladeshis to seek medical care as quickly as possible if they have been bitten, the BBC reports.
The snake species was declared extinct in the country in 2002, but has since returned – and is now increasing at an alarming rate.
According to scientists and wildlife experts, the increase is due to recurring floods, good food availability for the snake and reduced predator populations. They believe the snake – which is a good swimmer – spread in flood waters.
