Turkey quickly found themselves in trouble in their match against Portugal in the European football tournament on Saturday. Portugal scored two goals almost in a row and took a strong command of the match.
After the opening goal, Turkey got confused when the communication between the defense and the goalkeeper failed once more. The result was the unluckiest own goal of the tournament so far.
Turkey reversed the ball towards their own goal when the defender Samet Akaydin started to pass towards the goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. However, Bayindir was not quite ready for the situation, and his pass did not land. The ball trickled past the goalkeeper into the middle of the empty goal and Portugal took a 2–0 lead.
Cristiano Ronaldo already had time to get frustrated and throw his hands in the air when the ball slipped out of Portugal’s reach. Disappointment quickly turned into elation when Ronaldo and his teammates saw how the situation ended.

The hit was already the sixth own goal of the EC tournament. The best individual players lead the scoring market with two hits. In the previous European Championships three years ago, a record 11 own goals were scored.
Portugal would have a chance to secure their place in Group F of the EC tournament with a win. Turkey beat Georgia in their opening match, so they also have a good chance of reaching the playoffs. After this, both will play one more match in the group stage.
