Large blackout in the Balkans | SVT News

The problems arose in Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania and on the coast of Croatia during Friday, writes Reuters. Among other things, all power went out in Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo, and in the city of Split in Croatia, all traffic lights stopped working, causing traffic chaos.

Energy distributors in the four countries are working together to find out the cause of the blackout and to restore electricity. So far there is no confirmed cause, but according to Balkan Insight the problem is believed to have started in Montenegro.

It is very hot in the countries at the moment, with temperatures around the 40-degree mark. According to Albania’s state electricity company, the extreme heat may be behind the power outage, while the Bosnian counterpart states that the outage was caused by problems with the distribution.

Electricity has gradually started to come back on in parts of the affected countries.
