In the case of passenger cars and light trucks, which, apart from a few exceptions, have a total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, the basic rule is that the vehicle must be inspected no later than 14 months after the previous inspection.
Before 20 May 2018, a different system applied, which was based on the last digit of the registration number.
If you don’t keep track of when the last inspection took place, it can be difficult to know when it’s time for the next one. In addition, the 14-month rule does not apply to all cars on the road.

Not all cars need to be inspected
The first thing to be aware of is whether you need to inspect the car at all.
If the car is new, for example, it does not need to be inspected until 36 months, or three years, after it was put into use. After the first inspection, you have another 24 months, or two years, before the next inspection.
After that, the usual interval of 14 months applies until the car turns 30 years old, when it starts to be classified as a vintage car. Then there is again a maximum of 24 months between the inspections that apply.
When the car turns 50 years old, based on the point “Vehicle year” in the road traffic register, it is completely exempt from the requirement for a control inspection. It requires that an approved inspection has been carried out within the last 2 previous calendar years.

When should the car be inspected? Then you will find the answer
Something that is good to know about car inspections is that the Swedish Transport Agency does not send out any summons when it is time to inspect. The responsibility for keeping track of this therefore lies entirely with you as the car owner.
However, most car owners probably know that inspection companies are more than happy to send out invitations to book an inspection appointment several months in advance.
If you want to find out yourself when it is time to inspect, the Swedish Transport Agency offers a number of ways to do this.
For example, they have a page on their website where you can enter your registration number to see when the car is to be inspected, as well as a SMS service with a similar function.
The Swedish Transport Agency also offers the e-service Your vehicles as well as the mobile app My vehicleswhere you can enter your registration number and get a lot of facts about your car.
