The Danish team suffered a somewhat unexpected loss against Slovenia in the opening match (1–1). Morten Hjulmand was unluckily made the scapegoat, after a shot caught him and set up Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
But against England, the midfielder became a hero instead.
Hjulmand struck with a real dream goal when he equalized at 1-1 in the 34th minute. The midfielder fired a solid long shot that found its way in via the goal post, and was unreachable for the English goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford.
Hjulmand, who regularly plays for Portuguese side Sporting CP, was then substituted in the 82nd minute to warm applause and loud cheers from the Danish crowd.
The match ended just 1–1, and the teams had to share the points.
Replaced Kane
England had a tough time offensively, and in addition to their lead goal in the 18th minute of the match, they didn’t get to attack at all. Then the English national team captain, Gareth Southgate, chose to stand for a move that made many English supporters raise their eyebrows.
With just over 20 minutes left to play, Southgate chose to pick off the entire front trio. Both Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka had to leave, but also the first goalscorer for the game and big star Harry Kane was replaced.
In came Ollie Watkins, Eberechi Eze and Jarrod Bowen instead to try to get the English attacking machinery going. Together, the trio have 25 caps, compared to Saka, Foden and Kane’s 161.
Still on the bench, however, was Cole Palmer, who came second in the scoring league in the Premier League with his 22 goals. The Chelsea player has not yet played anything in this championship.
Everything to play for
The result means that all the teams in the group have the chance to clinch the group victory. After two rounds, England still leads the group on four points. Denmark and Slovenia both have two points, and Serbia is last on one.
In the final group stage, Denmark face Serbia, while England take on Slovenia.
