Football: Spain won the big meeting – after an Italian own goal

Spain is ready for the round of 16 in the football European Championship. Advancement was secured after a 1-0 victory against Italy. The Spaniards dominated the match picture and lined up several scoring chances.

But it was Italy’s defender Riccardo Calafiori who became the match’s only scorer – for Spain.

    Nico Williams played the ball in from the left wing and the 22-year-old miserably headed in the 1-0 goal in the 55th minute. On the replay it was seen how Donnarumma is on the ball and sets up his teammate.

    Before that, it was Barcelona midfielder Pedri who created several good scoring chances. The 21-year-old forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into a giant save after only a few minutes.

    Before the own goal, Pedri had another sharp scoring chance – but the finish went just wide of the post.

    Donnarumma then made sure that Italy “only” conceded a goal after several good parades.

    The victory means that Spain are ready for the play-offs after six points from two games.

    – Now we have to continue on this track. We know how difficult it is in this tournament, says Cucurella.

    In the final round, they face Albania, while Italy face Croatia.
