The Riksdag’s culture committee’s initiative is initially about conducting studies to gain a deeper understanding of the industry, an understanding that will form the basis of future political decisions.
– The state needs to have a good knowledge of this industry of the future. Now we are doing an inventory to get an overall picture, says member of parliament Lars Mejern Larsson (S), who will lead the study.
Multi-billion turnover
According to the industry organization Dataspelsbranschen, the Swedish computer game companies had a turnover of SEK 32.5 billion in Sweden in 2023.
– The industry is responsible for over SEK 2.6 billion in corporate tax every year and contributes to welfare, says Lars Wingefors about the industry’s societal importance.
Tens of thousands of employees
If you include the gambling companies’ foreign subsidiaries, the industry accounts for a turnover of SEK 86.5 billion. A total of 8,445 people were employed in Sweden and around 16,500 people abroad.
– This is a fast-growing part of the cultural industries that needs recognition, says Lars Mejern Larsson (S).
