“On January 9, the President of the Republic appointed me. On June 30, I would like the French to choose me.” Gabriel Attal presented this Thursday, June 20, the program of the presidential camp for the upcoming legislative elections, directly calling on voters to choose him as his own successor to Matignon.
During a press conference at Renaissance HQ, the outgoing Prime Minister detailed several areas of his camp’s program, on purchasing power, work, energy and security. All this, by once again hammering the opposition, whether it be the New Popular Front or the National Rally. A look back at the main declarations and announcements from this speech by Gabriel Attal.
Attal calls on the French to “choose” him in the face of “extremes”
“This is the first time in more than 25 years that the French will choose a Prime Minister. Obviously there will be a before and an after. And at the end of this election, necessarily, there will be a before and after in the practice of power, in the balance of institutions”, insisted Gabriel Attal this Thursday.
“Do not scatter your votes in the first round,” he said, recalling that the presidential camp presented itself under the banner “Together for the Republic” and that it was “the useful vote from the first round to counter the extremes”. “Whatever the result of the election, the President of the Republic is president until 2027. The result of the election is therefore not who is President of the Republic, it is who is Prime Minister , who governs, with what government and what majority,” he explained.
He defended a “very clear” choice: “you have on one side Jordan Bardella with the National Rally and others alliance”, which he described as a party of “unpreparedness, muddle and fog”. On the other, “Jean-Luc Mélenchon with the France insoumise alliance and others”, designated from the “camp of compromise and dissimulation”. And then there are the ‘Together for the Republic’ candidates, behind me,” he insisted.
“Put up barriers” against anti-Semitism
Gabriel Attal ordered political leaders to “put up barriers” in the face of the rise of anti-Semitism and to “refuse to trivialize (it)”, targeting Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France Insoumise.
“Politicians and political parties have a responsibility to put up barriers, to prevent a certain number of speeches from becoming trivialized,” said the Prime Minister, who is leading the presidential camp’s campaign in the legislative elections. “Because a speech that becomes commonplace, a hatred that becomes commonplace, it can lead some people, including young people, to the worst,” he added.
Proposals for purchasing power
Gabriel Attal made several announcements on the issue of purchasing power this Thursday. The outgoing Prime Minister notably confirmed his desire to increase the value of pensions, by indexing them to inflation, and promised the implementation of a 1 euro mutual fund for seniors.
On real estate, Gabriel Attal also confirmed that he wanted to “remove notary fees” for purchases up to 250,000 euros, in order to “allow middle-class French people to buy their first home”. This would be “a gain in purchasing power of 15,000 euros for the middle classes”, he said. Finally, the Prime Minister promised to “enshrine in law a golden budgetary rule”: not to increase taxes, “whatever happens”.
On work, Macron bonus and lower costs
On the question of work, Gabriel Attal confirmed his promise to want to increase the ceiling of the Macron bonus, which could rise to 10,000 euros per year, compared to 6,000 euros currently.
The Prime Minister opposed the increase in the minimum wage to 1,600 euros, the proposal of the New Popular Front, affirming that it would destroy “500,000 jobs”. On the other hand, Gabriel Attal recommended a reduction in employer contributions for low wages above the minimum wage, a measure which should make it possible to free up “salary increases”.
Finally, Gabriel Attal once again reiterated his desire to develop the four-day week in companies, in order to allow “employees who cannot telework to also benefit from an additional day of rest”.
14 new nuclear reactors
Gabriel Attal insisted on his project of an ecology “which is aimed at everyone”. The Prime Minister once again recalled the support of the presidential camp for the development of nuclear power, affirming “the start of work on 14 new nuclear reactors”.
On the environmental side, Gabriel Attal also assured that he wanted to develop access to electric cars, affirming that “100,000 clean vehicles at 100 euros per month maximum will be put on the market”.
On security, sanctions against “minor offenders”
On the security aspect, the outgoing Prime Minister said he wanted to “review the minority excuse for young delinquents, in order to break recidivism and the feeling of impunity”. A measure to create a “surge of authority for our youth”, Gabriel Attal assuring that he wants to “protect young people from social networks” and “reaffirm the authority of the teacher” at school.
