NPA activist Philippe Poutou was nominated by the New Popular Front for the legislative elections in Aude, on RN lands. What result can he hope for?
The candidacy of Philippe Poutou in the legislative elections was a general surprise: the activist of the New Anticapitalist Party (NPA) was nominated by the New Popular Front, on the quota of constituencies allocated to La France insoumise. Municipal councilor of Bordeaux, Philippe Poutou is thus parachuted into the 1st constituency of Aude, won for the first time by the National Rally in 2022.
The RN in the lead in the Europeans
In the last legislative elections, the RN candidate Christophe Barthès won the 1st constituency of Aude in the second round with 53.56% of the votes, against the socialist Sophie Courrière Calmon, invested by Nupes. Two years later, will Philippe Poutou manage to recover this constituency long won by the left?
The task is not easy for the three-time presidential candidate. Indeed, since the last legislative elections, the RN has confirmed its presence in the Carcassonne region: Jordan Bardella’s list came first in the European elections in this constituency, on June 9, with 42% of the votes cast. Conversely, the socialist, communist, rebellious and environmentalist lists together only gathered 28% of the votes.
A dissident candidate on the left
For Philippe Poutou, a victory in the 2024 legislative elections promises to be all the more difficult as he will face a dissident left-wing candidate who has the advantage of being well established in the territory: the vice-president of Carcassonne -agglo Aurélien Turchetto, who described in a press release the parachuting of Poutou as “humiliation”.
