The dark film adaptation of Umberto Eco’s church crime thriller The Name of the Rose with acting legend Sean Connery and the young Christian Slater is something that every film fan should have seen. The classic will be released in August for the first time extensively restored in 4K/UHD resolution with additional Blu-ray.

In 1327, the English Franciscan brother William of Baskerville (Sean Connery) finds himself in a wealthy Benedictine abbey on the cloud-covered slopes of the Apennines. Together with his young assistant Adson (Christian Slater), he is to organize a delicate meeting between the Minorites, who are suspected of heresy, and emissaries of the Pope, as the emperor’s special ambassador.
But it comes to mysterious deaths and other strange occurrenceswhich lead the scholar and assistant ever deeper into the secrets of the abbey. Meanwhile, his adversary, Inquisitor Bernardo Gui (F. Murray Abraham), sees the devil at work and wants to clear up the matter in his own way.
The Name of the Rose is so good
Jean-Jacques Annaud’s classic (Seven Years in Tibet), co-produced by Bernd Eichinger, is not only enjoying a high rating of 7.1 out of 10 in the Moviepilot community: The expert critics at FILMSTARTS have also given The Name of the Rose

It says that the film, in addition to the excellent cast, even in the supporting roles of “the development of a mysterious, dark, fear-filled atmosphere” into which only the main character lets light penetrate. Praise is given numerous staging and visual highlightswhereby the overall homogeneous picture is complemented by the equipment and costumes.
