Basketball coach Gordon Herbert, 65, tells Urheilu that he is interested in coaching in the NBA and at the national team level.
Canadian-Finnish basketball star coach by Gordon Herbert career extension is currently open.
Herbert, 65, who has been the head coach of the German national basketball team since 2021, confirms that he will leave the team after the Paris Olympics. Herbert’s contract extends until the 2025 European Championship.
Herbert tells Urheilu that he has had extensive negotiations, including with the major league clubs of the North American NBA.
– I had negotiations with a Japanese, a Chinese and two top European teams, but I was contacted by the NBA and I ended up waiting before writing a contract anywhere, Herbert reveals.
– Nothing certain is on the table yet, but I want to wait to see what happens before I write contracts. If I end up in the NBA, it would be possible for me to still coach in a national team, Herbert describes.
Herbert’s aim is to write a deal before the Paris Olympics, but at the moment he considers that unlikely. At the moment, he is one hundred percent focused on coaching the German national team.
The top coach believes his next contract will be his last before retirement.
– My goal has always been to coach Canada, I wanted to stay in the German national team until 2028, but it didn’t work out and our road ends on a respectful note. Right now I hope to continue coaching, but we’ll see what happens.
Herbert was chosen last year’s best coach in both Germany and Finland.
